Dipa Karmakar

I have to form myself as I have never really formed before and try to help you to form some sort of a reasoned estimate about one of the most inspirational figures in contemporary Indian sports, Dipa Karmakar. She is an Indian gymnast who has outright changed the stereotypical global image of Indian girls. Even without winning any medal, she did something which has boosted the confidence of the whole nation. Let us observe some of the things entrepreneurs can learn from gymnast Dipa Karmakar.

1. Work hard, risk it, and win it

Let me ask you an honest question, if Dipa Karmakar hadn’t come so close to winning the glory or crashed out early in the tournament, do you think you would’ve been reading about her?

No! Neither would the dreams of Indian gymnasts have flown as high as they are doing now.

Dipa Karmakar too knew what the stakes were and what she represents. All the dreams and hopes of Indian gymnasts and expectation of the-then medal-less India were on her shoulders. And boy she did put up a show!

Be brisk to take calculative risks!

2. Fight, get beaten, fight again

As an entrepreneur, you will be subjected to situations which you would normally avoid and sometimes you may not get what you desired. You may lose a big order or you may be outsmarted by your rivals. You have to be able to take these defeats head on and get back to work without losing any motivation as Dipa Karmakar did after Rio Olympic; vowing to work even harder.

3. Be thorough, no shortcuts

Dipa Karmakar was passionate about what she was doing and she did it well. There are no shortcuts to success. You must have realized this fact while watching her sensational performance. No, she didn’t win but she successfully established the fact that with thorough practice and honest diligence your dreams can become a reality.

4. Believe in yourself

She believed in herself and this is the lesson you must learn for Dipa Karmakar if not other things. Her chances were bleak and nobody would have bet his money on her. But she showed the world that if you really believe in yourself, then with hard work and determination the world can be yours.

A crucial message to young entrepreneurs; you may not be fully confident about your chances but always have faith in yourself and believe that you can do it!

5. Work in silence and let success do the talking

Nobody knew Dipa Karmakar at the day-2 of Rio Olympics. But now everybody in India knows about her mesmerizing performance at the gymnast’s final. All due to her sublime performance which was the result of perseverance and her assiduity for countless days.

As an entrepreneur, you have to work really hard for a project from its start to execution. In the end, everyone will see your work and praise you but only you would know what amount of diligence it took to get the job done. And it is a thing you will be happy to keep in the dark.

So, let your success do the talking and let others doubt because, in the end, the same people will applaud you.

6. Be the inspiration you once were looking for

You may have come across many people complaining about the lack of figureheads to show them their path.

Dipa Karmakar, neither had peers nor anyone in her country to look up to. What she was doing was never done before, representing India at the Olympics in gymnastics. But she had something different planned out for Indian gymnast history.

Many great entrepreneurs once had to face the same situation. They were about to do something that was never done before but they did it anyway. So, don’t look out for examples but be an example yourself.

7. Never fear the competition

Competition can be scary sometimes. The odds may not always be in your favor. But that doesn’t mean you should shy away from the competition.

Yes, there will be more experienced players in the field and yes they may be hundred times stronger than you are with all odds against you. May be so, may be so!

But the theory of competition says that once the race starts all bets are off. Fearing the competition and running away from the battle is not an option for you, it never was!

Dipa Karmakar faced the same scenario and all bet were against her. But she emerged with flying colours and may be it is too soon to say but she already has become a legend for India when it comes to gymnastics.

A great entrepreneur is one who learns from anyone who can offer him a better insight into his field and help him to become the master of his own craft. And when it comes to Dipa Karmakar, one can learn so many things from her journey; from a regular gymnast to a celebrity amidst the huge cricket loving population of India.

I know you guys were thrilled by her performance and so was I. Let us hope that in the next Olympic she will bring home a medal (probably gold)!
