With the growing popularity of online shopping sites, there has been a significant rise in Indians purchasing basic stuff from sites like Amazon, Jabong, Myntra and Flipkart. Even before buying anything on the virtual screen, we believe that these sites are trustworthy and safe.

Have you ever been a victim of fraud? Imagine a situation where you have ordered a nice bright neon bag only to find the delivered parcel to be broken. That’s too heart wrenching. Isn’t it?

What if I say that does not only happen with consumers. Sometimes, the online shopping platforms are equally affected by misleading consumers and misleading delivery agents. This is the story of a Chennai-based middleman who earned 5 Lakhs through courier service and the company had no clue about his misdeeds.

Naveen, a 21 year old B.com graduate, recently got hired as an in-charge of Washermenpet area in Chennai’s Flipkart office. He used all his smartness in stealing 12 IPhones, costing approximately 5 Lakhs. You read that right. 5 Lakhs! He just brilliantly exchanged fake ones with the new ones.

This business started when he had his first delivery task. The customer had ordered an IPhone, which he found was not the one he wanted. So, he returned it. Then and there, the Flipkart delivery boy, Naveen, bought a fake IPhone from a local mobile store and replaced the original one. He sent it back to the company claiming that the customer has rejected it on delivery. His crime went undetected. This gave him more courage and he went on doing this. He later went on ordering IPhones with fake addresses. When the parcel used to come he replaced them and returned them with fake ones; always claiming them to be unsatisfactory product by respective customers.

The company realized that something fishy was going on in the north Chennai region. The phones were found to be fake every time. It inquired internally about the matter and came to the conclusion that most of the returned packages are from Chennai courier office. After some more investigations, the police confronted the newly appointed delivery boy Naveen.

Naveen confessed his crime and also said that he was doing this since last one month. He couldn’t execute his plan at the office because of CCTV cameras installed in there. Inspector K. Shankar of Madhavaram police station stated that since the delivery boy was not caught in the first attempt, he had the guts to fool everyone. Also, the police added that he was not financially sound. He used to borrow money from his classmates and wasn’t able to repay the loans because the salary was not adequate.

Whatever the reason may be, but Naveen proved that he has brains. If he hadn’t taken crime as a source of extra income, he could have made history. What do you think?
