Edtech startups are changing the face of education in India in a rapid way and it is clearly evident that startups in the education sector are going to rise by leaps and bounds in 2017. A lot of startups have come up in this space but are targeting different pain points and it will be interesting to note who will be the one to finally disrupt!

While some startups are providing online courses in various fields, some are providing career advice. While some are helping students prepare for competitive examinations, some are merging education with Virtual Reality to change how education is perceived in the country. 1. Byju’s

Careerguide supports students and help them in their career decision. The startup has been addressing the problems and challenges of students across the country and have a network of more than 1100 career counsellors.

3. Collegedekho

Founder: Ruchir Arora

Investors: GirnarSoft, Man Capital

This startup aims to solve the biggest dilemma of young graduates and students, which is to find the best university or college for further studies. Listing of colleges, listing of exams category wise, along with news and bits related to them is provided by this startup.

4. CueMath

Founder: Manan Khurma

Learning Maths online from professional teachers who have gone through an extensive training is what CueMath is all about. The startup has programs that are meant for both brilliant and weak students.

5. CultureAlley

Co-founders: Nishant Patni, Pranshu Bhandari

Investors: Tiger Global Management, 500 Startups, Kae Capital, Julie McDermott

CultureAlley, with it’s highly curated teaching methods is a platform for learning several languages. However, it is most popular in India, Pakistan and Nepal for it’s Hello English app which ranks number one among free educational apps. The app supports 15 local languages which form the basis of learning English.

6. Dost Education

Co-founders: Sneha Sheth, Sindhuja Jeyabal

Dost Education is helping mothers who are not educated to contribute in their child’s education but desire to do so by deploying a simple, low-cost mobile, and voice-based curriculum via the phone.

7. Edudharma

Co-founders: Dinesh Manickam, N Balaji

Edudharma is trying to bridge the gap between students and funding platforms by creating an online crowdfunding platform for NGOs, corporates, individuals, and others which can help fund a student’s education who drop out for financial constraints. Within 100 days of launch, the company has raised Rs 12,16,801.

8. Edukart

Co-founders: Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Ishan Gupta, Mayank Gupta

Edukart provides a wide range of courses from a range of Indian and international providers including universities as well as other edtech portals. It is very well helping students and professionals to enhance their skills through certification program. It doesn’t itself develop the courses and is acting just as a distributor platform.

9. Embibe

Founder: Aditi Avasthi

Embibe provides a mobile as well as tablet friendly environment to help students prepare for Indian competitive examinations like medical, engineering etc. The startup’s aim is to help students cope with the examination pressure using data analytics. When a student takes an examination in the platform, the result explains the student about his various weak points, behavior variation etc instead of simply presenting a marksheet.

10. Entri

Entri is a plug-and-play test preparation platform on the cloud for schools, teachers and coaching institutes. Entri’s key features are 30,000 entrance-oriented questions, study materials and formulas; a Q&A forum allows students to clear doubts with subject-matter experts

11. Flipclass

Founder: Vinet Dwivedi

Based in Bangalore, flipClass is an online portal Home Tutoring Solutions. Users can find private tutors, monitor progress of their ward interested teachers can also join this community. Currently Flipclass has 2000+ tutors in Bangalore and Hyderabad for various subjects.

12. Getmyuni

This startup is helping students make the right education choice through constructive and reliable reviews and data insights coming from students themselves. It helps students during their complete lifecycle i.e from finding a college till graduation and beyond. It also helps colleges to admit the right students in their colleges via its analytics driven recruitment and marketing solutions.

13. Gyan Labs

Founder: Priyadeep Sinha

Gyan Labs is mainly focused on K-10 students and is providing them a mobile-friendly learning platform by gamifying and personalising learning experience. It allows parents to assess students and the platform also suggests remedial action for learning gaps. It is available in English as well as vernacular languages.

14. Imarticus Learning

Aimed mainly at professionals, this startup mainly provides a platform to gain knowledge in the field of Financial Services and Analytics to make them career ready. The courses are offered by world class professionals with specific domain expertise.

The startup enables students to learn and revise concepts for school curriculum for standards IX to XII and other competitive examinations like IIT JEE, AIPMT, CA-CPT and more. They work on offline mode as well.

16. MeetUniv

MeetUniv is a solution to more than 30 million students across the country enrolled in various universities or looking for getting enrolled. It lists 40,000 courses from 3,000 universities around the world, as well as over 100 scholarships that Indian students mostly rely on to go abroad.

17. Meritnation

Meritnation entered the segment of K-12 students way back in 2009 and has grown to be one of the most useful websites among them. It is a complete social network experience for education. Once a student logs in with relevant details related to education, he/she is connected to other students of that school/college. While study materials and textbook solutions are available for free, Entrance exams, Chapter tests and most Online tuitions on the platform are paid.

18. Nayi Disha

Co-founders: Kushal Bhagia and Kartik Aneja

Nayi Disha is one startup that is making education fun for pre-schoolers in the form of various innovative games and learning models. As claimed by the startup, they are serving 50 schools in cities like Bangalore, Delhi, Baroda and Jaipur. They have created 30 apps for children by now!

19. Niit.tv

NIIT has become a big name in the education sector especially among Digital Education based companies, since more than 25 years. The platform provides live and on-demand courses based on the classroom courses provided by the many NIIT classroom centres across the country.

20. Online Tyari

The startup is using Virtual Reality to put students in an immersive metaverse by which they can learn and retain better by both observing and interacting with the subject matter. The solution is being built for students in Classes VI-VIII to understand science and mathematics better.

22. Prepathon

Founder: Allwin Agnel

A product by PaGaLGuY, Prepathon helps students prepare for exams like CAT, IBPS, SSC CGL and helps companies to host their own courses on the platform. When a student signs up for a course, they get a coach who monitors their behavior 24/7.

23. Qriyo

Co-founders: Mudit Jain and Rishabh Jain

Investor: Idein Ventures

Qriyo provides courses in academics, hobbies, co-curricular activities and Yoga and fitness categories. It employs freelance teachers who are experts in their subject and hence opens a door for revenue for both the parties. It claims to have 6000+ registered gurus and 2000+ customers.

24. Schoolguru

Co-founders: Shantanu Rooj, Ravi Rangan and Anil Bhat

Schoolguru is working with 15 universities across the country to provide e-learning facilities to it’s students. In this way, even the universities are saved from the mammoth task of creating online courses and keeping students engaged online.

25. Simplilearn

Simplilearn is aimed at IT professionals who are wishing to upgrade their skills through a certification and structured program. 60% of it’s takers belong to US where online learning is more prevalent but India is fast catching up. It provides more than 300 courses.

This startup helps students to take the right decisions during the day of the exam by helping them go through heaps of technologically driven contents that identifies the ‘trend’ and provides them with most relevant set of questions as per their exam selection.

27. Superprofs

Superprofs is an online platform for preparing for competitive tests like UPSC, GATE, CA, CS, Civil Services etc. It claims to have 386000+ students enrolled, 10000+ course videos, 200+ professors and 217000+ app installs.

Talentedge offers interactive learning solutions not only for individuals but also corporates. For individuals, they offer various courses and executive programs while for corporates, it offers industry programmes, product modules and end-user learning. The startup has tied up with premiere institutes across the country to offer high quality courses.

29. Testbook

30. Tinytapps

It is dedicated to the development of the procedure in which a child is taught from the very beginning by generating curiosity and fostering creativity. They have a complete syllabus based preschool learning system.

31. Toppr

Toppr helps Indian students to crack college entrance examinations with unlimited practice tests, feedback reports, and benchmarking.

32. TOT Smart Education

Having served already over 400 schools and over 50,000 students, the startup is making education available to the masses irrespective of economic status. It’s product line includes physical textbooks and mobile app for game-based learning (Pedron) along with a performance monitor.

Trading Sikho is a platform to learn about stock market and it helps to understand all the nuances involved in stock market trading.

Founder: Chirag Gujrati

Training52 is an e-learning platform which was started with the inputs from acamedicians and experts from around the world. Ueducation has taken a different approach compared to other Indian edtech startups in India by engaging industry experts in the courseware apart from academicians. Ronnie Screwvala, the media magnate started Upgrad in July 2015. The startup has been successful to catch up very fast with the emerging edtech space in India. Like Simplilearn, it also targets professionals who are looking to upgrade their skills. The areas in which it provides specialization is more diverse and covers everything from entrepreneurship to digital marketing.

38. Vedantu

Vedantu is an online tutoring platform that provides live 1-to-1 or 1-to-few tutoring for students belonging to class 4 to class 12 for both ICSE and CBSE boards across India. It covers a wide range of subjects starting from science and mathematics to languages like Hindi, German and much more. They have developed a technology called WAVE (Whiteboard Audio Video Environment) which aids in growing the teaching experience better.

39. Walnut Knowledge

Walnut Knowledge was started with the aim of popularizing quizzes across schools, colleges and corporate organisations. They have trained over 900 students with their “Quizshala” workshops. The founders believe in education children of the world in the right way so that he/she can take well-defined career decisions and don’t depend on hypothesis.

WizIQ is online teaching and training platform which is making virtual classrooms possible with the help of mobile application. They provide live classes, integrated cloud storage, mobile learning, tests and assignments and many other interesting features.They have been awarded the title of ‘best virtual classroom provider’ at the World Education Congress.

Xprep is acting as an intermediate between tutors and students. While tutors face the problem of getting students in this highly crowded market, parents face the problem of finding the right guide for their children. It helps tutors to communicate with parents in a transparent way through its platform and is a discovery platform for teachers.

42. Zeroinfy

Based in Kolkata, Zeroinfy allows students buy course videos prepared by teachers. It also encourages peer-to-peer learning where students can share their personal notes via the platform. It offers courses like CA, CS, CFA, UPSC and IIT-JEE.
